PREAMBLE

LBS Institute of Technology for Women (LBSITW), Thiruvananthapuram, acknowledges its responsibility as a higher education institution to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

As a women’s engineering college committed to excellence in technical education and social responsibility, the institution integrates SDG principles into its academic, research, administrative, and community-oriented activities. This policy provides a structured framework to align institutional initiatives with the 17 SDGs, ensuring measurable contributions to sustainable development at the local and global levels.

Objectives

  • Integrate SDG principles across all academic programs and pedagogical practices.
  • Foster SDG-aligned research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
  • Develop sustainable and inclusive campus infrastructure.
  • Engage students and faculty in community development programs aligned with SDG targets.
  • Promote gender equality and women’s leadership in STEM fields.
  • Strengthen partnerships with industry, government, and NGOs for SDG implementation.
  • Measure, monitor, and report institutional progress toward SDGs.

Institutional Commitment

LBSITW commits to:

  1. Establishing governance mechanisms to oversee SDG implementation and evaluation.
  2. Encouraging innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and social impact research.
  3. Ensuring transparency and accountability in SDG-related reporting.
  4. Reviewing and updating SDG strategies annually to ensure continuous improvement.
  5. Allocating adequate financial, human, and infrastructural resources to SDG activities.

GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE

SDG Steering Committee

Chairperson: Principal  

Convener: Senior Faculty (with sustainability expertise)
Members: Deans, Heads of Departments, NSS Officer, Green Protocol Chairperson, Campus Engineer, Entrepreneurship Cell Coordinator, Administrative Staff Representative, and Student Representatives.

Functions:

  • Formulate and approve annual SDG action plans.
  • Review institutional progress using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Facilitate cross-departmental collaboration and resource sharing.
  • Foster partnerships with government, industry, and community organizations.

IMPLEMENTATION FRAMEWORK

Academic Integration

  • Incorporate SDG-related themes into course related assignments, micro projects and practical activities.
  • Encourage student projects addressing real-world sustainability challenges.
  • Promote interdisciplinary learning through hackathons, seminars, and workshops.
  • Align Program Outcomes (POs) and Course Outcomes (COs) with relevant SDGs.

Research and Innovation

  • Support faculty and student research aligned with SDG priorities such as clean energy, smart cities, waste management, and healthcare.
  • Facilitate innovation through the Institution’s Innovation Council and Innovation & Entrepreneurship Development Cell.
  • Collaborate with organizations and industry partners for impactful solutions.

Sustainable Campus Operations

  • Develop a renewable power generation.
  • Implement rainwater harvesting, waste segregation, and composting units.
  • Promote plastic-free campus initiatives and green event protocols.
  • Conduct regular energy and water audits for efficiency.

Community Engagement

  • Organize outreach programs such as food distribution, blood donation camps, and health drives.
  • Adopt villages for capacity building and digital literacy programs.
  • Conduct gender sensitization, mental health, and climate awareness campaigns through student clubs.

Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting

  • Steering Committee prepares an Annual SDG Action Plan with specific KPIs.
  • A centralized SDG Data Repository maintains records of all initiatives and outcomes.
  • Benchmark institutional progress with NIRF SDG Index and compliance with Green Protocol of Haritha Kerala Mission.
  • Prepare an Annual SDG Report summarizing key activities, metrics, and impact.
  • Upload report on the institutional website and include evidence in NBA SAR Criterion 9.11.
  • Disseminate achievements through appropriate media.

Resource Allocation

  • Budget: Minimum 8% of institutional budget earmarked for SDG-related initiatives.

Capacity Building and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Faculty Development: annual awareness session for faculty on SDG integration.
  • Student Training: Orientation on SDGs, workshops on social innovation, and hackathons.
  • External Collaboration: Partnerships with industries, NGOs, Panchayats, and research institutions for joint SDG initiatives.

Policy Review and Continuous Improvement

This policy will be reviewed once in 3 years by the SDG Steering Committee based on implementation outcomes, stakeholder feedback, and best practices.
Amendments will be approved by the Principal and Governing Body to ensure continued relevance and effectiveness.
