To enhance employability, technical competence, and professional readiness of students by providing hands-on experience in real-world engineering environments through structured and monitored internship programs.

Policy Guidelines

  1. Types
  • Short term internship – 4 to 6 weeks
  • Long term internship – 4 to 6 months (after completion of sixth semester)
  • One year internship (after completion of sixth semester)
  • Online internship – minimum 2 weeks (any time without affecting the academic practice)

2. Mandatory Compliance

  • The internships must be aligned with the academic objectives of the student’s program.
  • All internships should be done in a recognized industry, research organization, or relevant government institution.
  • All students should undergo at least one short term internship.
  • All long term/one year internship are permitted subject to the credit acquired by the student as per KTU regulations; such students should have only seminar and project courses pending at the time of applying.

2. Pre-Internship Activities

  • Orientation: The respective Department or Placement Cell shall organize an orientation session to familiarize students with internship objectives, procedures, expectations, and evaluation criteria.
  • Proposal Submission: Students must identify potential organizations and submit an Internship Proposal Form specifying details such as organization, duration, and objectives.
  • Approval Process: Prior approval from the Faculty Mentor and Head of the Department (HoD), Dean Academics is mandatory before commencement of the online/short term internship and from the Principal for long term/one year internship following the KTU regulations.

3. During Internship

  • Supervision:
    • Each student shall be assigned a Faculty Mentor from the department.
    • The hosting organization shall designate a Supervisor to oversee the student’s work.
  • Reporting:
    • Students must maintain a weekly logbook recording tasks, learning outcomes, and observations.
    • Periodic progress reports shall be submitted to the Faculty Mentor.
  • Code of Conduct: Students must adhere to professional ethics, confidentiality, and organizational rules during the internship period.

4. Post-Internship Activities

  • Report Submission: A detailed Internship Report must be submitted to the Faculty Mentor within the stipulated deadline.
  • Evaluation Components:
    • Quality of the internship report
    • Feedback from the industry supervisor
    • Seminar presentation/viva-voce evaluation

5. Documentation and Monitoring

  • All internship records, including proposals, approval letters, logbooks, reports, and evaluations shall be maintained by the respective departments.
  • The IQAC shall periodically audit internship documentation to ensure quality, relevance, and alignment with institutional objectives.

6. Mapping with Program Outcomes (POs) and Program Specific Outcomes (PSOs)

  • The learning outcomes of internships shall be mapped to relevant POs/PSOs.
  • Emphasis may be given to those POs/PSOs which are not attained through regular academic activities.

7. Review and Continuous Improvement

  • Feedback from students, mentors, and industry supervisors will be collected and analyzed after each academic year.
  • Based on feedback and IQAC review, necessary modifications will be made to improve the process and effectiveness of internship policies.
